The Grounder started out as a durable sneaker boot designed for the U.S. military during WWII. During the Second World War, American soldiers needed a reliable shoe that could offer comfort and support to troops stationed all over the world. The Grounder stepped in to do exactly that.
Standard issue for the United States Army, this dependable sneaker blended signature Posture Foundation cushioning with the protective technology of its unique lugged rubber outsoles. Crafted from strong rubber and engineered for impact, these trailblazing soles helped deliver battle-ready traction and grip while protecting the wearer’s feet from water and debris.
The original Grounder design merged the practicality of vintage workwear with revolutionary innovations engineered for performance, helping the military secure victory overseas.
Early Innovations
Before introducing The Grounder we know and love today to the market, P.F. Flyers first sold a boot called The Wade Light in the early 1940s.
Designed as the outdoorsmen’s shoe for hiking, fishing, and trekking, this lightweight boot featured a durable vulcanized rubber lug sole, a gusseted tongue to prevent the entry of sand and stones, and mesh eyelets to let water drain out without letting dirt in. It was an early edition of what would become an American staple.
Looking to combine this protective practicality with the casual everyday comfort of our Center High-Top shoe, The Grounder was born.
While The Wade Light’s signature soles kept feet safe from the outdoors, The Center’s easy-to-wear canvas upper was a more comfortable everyday choice. The Center was renowned amongst early athletes for its breathable high-top canvas support.
By adding the same distinctive soles to The Center’s versatile design, The Grounder revolutionized outdoor footwear.
Baseball Beginnings
In its early renditions, The Grounder embraced the spirit of play. Children wore the comfortable, heavy-duty shoe to play sports like baseball and football. It was similar in design to The Center, but boasted a more durable outsole and thicker tread.

In 2016, The Grounder’s origins saw a revival with the launch of the P.F. Flyers x Todd Snyder Grounder.
